The Power of

Ultraviolet Light

Ultraviolet Light

Germicidal UV Light Disinfection

The ultraviolet spectrum, having wavelengths shorter than visible light, is divided into three ranges: UVA, UVB and UVC. The most effective germicidal wavelengths are in the UVC range with 254-275nm being ideal for disruption of viruses and other pathogens.

The energy of uv light disrupts DNA replication and leads to microbial cell death and inactivation of viruses.

A highly versatile approach, germicidal UV light disinfection does not rely on chemicals or filtration and can be used effectively in many applications including on surfaces, in drinking water and air.

Germicidal UV LEDs

Traditional methods for generating germicidal UV light use mercury discharge lamps which are not environmentally sustainable and can be hazardous and difficult to dispose.

Recent advances in LED technology produced novel UV LEDs that generate specific UV wavelengths from solid-state microchips. Miniature, robust, and operating with a low electrical power, UV LEDs deliver highly stable output at specific wavelengths needed for the application. With advantages of size, weight, power consumption and lifetime UV LEDs are highly configurable in designs that disinfect diverse surfaces.

Producing the optimal germicidal wavelength of 275nm, UV LEDs  have demonstrated rapid germicidal effect, killing 99.9% of coronavirus in 1 second.

UV Light Spectrum

The germicidal power of uv light is well established, with scientific publications dating back over 60 years.

Due to the high energy of UVC, it is harmful when directly exposed to skin and eyes. For this reason, any UVC-based products must be used in unoccupied rooms or used by personnel who are shielded and protected. SteriLumen’s patented automated devices solve this challenge with the incorporation of ultra sensitive passive infrared (PIR) motion sensors and are UL certified (Listing Numbers: E519669, E51997) for photobiologic safety.
